California Minimum Wage Increases for 2019

(posted: December 19th, 2018)

California cities minimum wage increases

Quite a few cities, towns and municipalities in California have minimum wage mandates that are different from the minimum wage set by the state.

Many of these mandates include yearly stepped increases for several years until a certain level is reached, often followed by increases tied to the Consumer Price Index thereafter.

With some exceptions, employers in California are subject to both federal and state minimum wage laws. Now many cities and counties have enacted their own, higher minimum wage ordinances.

2019 California Minimum Wage

The California state minimum wage increases on January 1, 2019.

For employers with 25 employees or less the new wage is $11.00 per hour. Employers with 26 or more employees will be required to pay $12.00/hour.

So, Which Law Must You Follow?

The easiest way to remember is that when you are doing business in one of these cities you must follow the "stricter" standard; that is, you must pay the minimum wage that is most favorable to the employee.

The chart below shows some California cities with minimum wage changes in 2019.
