Arizona Releases Paid Sick Time Poster
posted: Tuesday, January 24th
Earned Paid Sick Time Law Effective July 1, 2017
Beginning July 1, 2017, Arizona employers are required to provide employees with earned paid sick time under the Arizona Fair Wages and Healthy Families Act. In anticipation of the new law, the Industrial Commission of Arizona has released the mandated poster that covered employers are required to display.
Background
Under the law, most employers are subject to Arizona's earned paid sick time law. (Earned paid sick time accrual rates, however, differ based on an employer's number of employees.)
The law defines "employer" as any corporation, proprietorship, partnership, joint venture, limited liability company, trust, association, political subdivision of the state, individual or other entity acting directly or indirectly in the interest of an employer in relation to an employee, but does not include the state of Arizona, or the United States. Notably, this definition differs slightly from the definition of "employer" in the minimum wage context, because it has no exemption for "small businesses." '''Therefore, even "small businesses" that are exempt from the state minimum wage requirements are subject to the law's earned paid sick time requirements.
