District of Columbia: Minimum Wage Rises to $11.50 Per Hour on July 1, 2016

New Legislation Raises Minimum Wage to $15.00 Over Next Several Years

Minimum Wage Rises to $15.00 Over Next Several Years
Under a new measure, the minimum wage for non-tipped employees in the District of Columbia is expected to rise according to the following schedule:

  • Beginning on July 1, 2017: .50 per hour;
  • Beginning on July 1, 2018: .25 per hour;
  • Beginning on July 1, 2019: .00 per hour;
  • Beginning on July 1, 2020: .00 per hour; and
  • Beginning on July 1, 2021, and no later than July 1 of each successive year, the minimum wage will be increased in proportion to the annual average increase, if any, in the Consumer Price Index.

Note: If the minimum wage set under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act is greater than the minimum hourly wage currently being paid under District law, the minimum hourly wage paid to an employee will be the federal minimum wage plus $1.

Tipped Minimum Wage
Under the new measure, the minimum hourly wage required to be paid by an employer to an employee who receives gratuities (tipped minimum wage), provided that the employee actually receives gratuities in an amount at least equal to the difference between the hourly wage paid and the appropriate minimum hourly wage, is expected to be as follows:

  • Beginning on July 1, 2017: .50 per hour;
  • Beginning on July 1, 2018: .25 per hour;
  • Beginning on July 1, 2019: .00 per hour;
  • Beginning on July 1, 2020: .00 per hour; and
  • Beginning on July 1, 2021, and no later than July 1 of each successive year, the minimum wage will be increased in proportion to the annual average increase, if any, in the Consumer Price Index.
