Arizona Supreme Court Opinion Upholds State Minimum Wage and Paid Sick Time

Opinion May Impact Workplace Policies and Practices

The Arizona Supreme Court has issued an opinion upholding a ballot initiative regarding the state minimum wage and earned paid sick time.

The court previously rejected a challenge (p. 6, Entry 57) to the ballot initiative, and stated that a written opinion explaining the court's decision would be released at a later time. That written opinion is now available by clicking here.

On the November 8, 2016 state ballot, Arizona voters approved an initiative providing for increases to the state minimum wage rate, and requiring most private employers in Arizona to offer paid sick time to eligible employees.

Certain groups challenged the legality of the ballot initiative, leading to the opinion discussed above.
