Arizona Supreme Court Upholds Legality of State Minimum Wage and Earned Paid Sick Time Ballot Initiative

The Arizona Supreme Court has issued an order upholding the legality of a ballot initiative regarding the state minimum wage and earned paid sick time.

Background
On the November 8, 2016 state ballot, Arizona voters approved an initiative providing for a rise in the hourly minimum wage to $10.00 per hour (from $8.05 per hour), effective January 1, 2017, as well as additional yearly increases to the minimum wage rate. Furthermore, the initiative requires most private employers in Arizona to offer paid sick time to eligible employees, effective July 1, 2017.

Certain groups challenged the legality of the ballot initiative.

Order
In the order, the court rejected the challenge to the legality of the ballot initiative. According to the order, a written opinion further explaining the court's decision will issue in due course.
