EEOC Launches Small Business Online Resource Center

Online Tool Provides Small Business Compliance Information, Tips, and Videos
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has released an online Small Business Resource Center, through which small business owners can find answers to common questions about their responsibilities under the federal employment antidiscrimination laws, along with tips on preventing workplace discrimination and how to address potential employment discrimination issues.
Background
An employer must have a certain number of employees to be covered by the laws the EEOC enforces. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act are both applicable to employers with 15 or more employees, and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act is applicable to employers with 20 or more employees. Virtually all employers are covered by the federal Equal Pay Act. Employers--including smaller businesses--may also be subject to state and/or local nondiscrimination law.
EEOC Small Business Resource Center
The Small Business Resource Center provides the following resources:
- Information about recordkeeping, workplace posters, and other requirements;
- Tips on how to address common workplace issues;
- Information and resources about specific discrimination topics (e.g., age discrimination, disability discrimination);
- A small business fact sheet that provides an overview of small business legal obligations under federal antidiscrimination laws;
- Responses to frequently asked questions by small business owners;
- Advice regarding common employment decisions, from hiring and training to evaluating, disciplining, and firing employees,
- A small business assistance tool through which small businesses can contact EEOC staff to answer questions about the laws enforced by the EEOC, explain the EEOC charge process, and provide information about employment discrimination;
- Small business video resources that provide information on federal antidiscrimination laws in video format; and
- A glossary of terms used by the EEOC.
